Electro-Voice NetMax Precision Processing for St Albans Church

St Paul’s Church in the Hertfordshire, UK town of St Albans is one of the largest in the county, accommodating over 1,000 people at capacity. The church’s traditional design has been successfully modernised both in terms of its comfortable interior furnishings and its technology, having recently been equipped with an all-new Electro-Voice sound system for its worship services and concerts.

Having supplied an extensive multimedia system in 2008, installation company Creative Digital Solutions was commissioned to design and install a new multi-speaker live sound system, integrating it with the original AV equipment.

CDS’s first choice of sound reinforcement loudspeaker is Electro-Voice – ideal for providing high levels of clarity and intelligibility for live and recorded music and speech. In the case of St Paul’s, the system design drew on the different characteristics of several EV products, notably the Vertical Beam Shaping of the Xi2123A/106F.

CDS used an extensive EASE model of the Church’s interior to determine that an Xi2123A/106F should be installed as the main central speaker to ensure excellent auditory focus and powerful full-range sound projection. Via an EV Netmax N8000 digital processor, the speaker’s Vertical Beam Shaping reduces low frequencies emanating to the platform directly below and optimises the tri-amplified configuration, which is driven via an EV CPS 4.10 amplifier equipped with an RCM-810 remote monitoring module.

For delay speakers within the main body and side aisles of the Church, EV’s compact ZX3 and ZX1i speakers in white finish were chosen for their music and speech versatility and effective aesthetic blending. These, along with a separate 100-V line auxiliary room relay system, were driven via a remote-monitored EV CPS 8.5 amplifier with channel-selectable wattage and impedance. With 16 outputs, the NetMax processor effectively EQ’d, delayed, and optimised each of these eight speakers within their specific area.

Two SBA760 subwoofers were specified for controlled low-frequency response in a compact floorprint.

For the traditional pipe organ located at the rear of the Church (precisely mic’d with large diaphragm condenser microphones), the N8000 was also utilised effectively to distribute the organ sound, bypassing the normal delayed audio settings for each speaker to minimise echo when mixed with the live worship band.
