Shuttlesound signs award-winning drummer to endorse Electro-Voice PL Series microphones
January 11th, 2010

Award-winning drummer Johanne James is the latest signing to Shuttlesound‘s artist endorsement programme for Electro-Voice microphones, flying the flag for the new EV PL Series in particular.

For three years in a row, Johanne James has won the Classic Rock Society Award for Best Drummer of 2008, earning his place among the best drummers in the UK. He is no stranger to the limelight, having played a variety of stages from small venues to major festivals around the world, performing with the likes of Dream Theater, Psychotic Waltz and Pain of Salvation. James is best-known as the ‘engine room‘ of Threshold, a veteran band on the progressive metal scene, and has recently formed his own hard metal 3-piece, Kyrbgrinder, as a means of sharing his unique style of hard driving, infectious melodic rock.

Johanne James will be giving the new EV microphones an exhaustive road test, playing nearly 200 gigs a year with seven PL Series placed on his Premier kit. The introduction to Electro-Voice came courtesy of the Wembley Drum Centre. ”To be honest, I didn‘t even know that EV made mics!” says James. ”I needed something robust for my drums because I play quite loud. The PL Series actually seems to respond to pressure - there is no distortion, and they don‘t break!”

Inspired by a legacy that began in the late 1970s, the new PL Series is a comprehensive family of vocal and instrument microphone products featuring seven vocal models and three instrument models, characterised by exceptional durability, sonic performance, and contemporary styling.

”The better the mic, the better the end result, Although I am lukcy enough to work with a really good engineer, who gives us a consistent sound wherever we play.” Johanne James is using a packaged kit called the PL DK7, which contains

1x PL33 dynamic supercardioid, kick drum mic,

4x PL35 dynamic supercardioid, tom/snare mics, and

2x PL37 condenser cardioid, overhead/hi-hat mics,

all packaged in a high-quality gig bag.

The PL33 dynamic supercardioid, kick drum mic delivers tight low-end and punctuation for kick drums and low-frequency instruments. The PL35 dynamic supercardioid, tom/snare mic, with its unique body design, integrated swivel, and drum rim clamp, is voiced for exceptionally natural tom/snare sounds. The PL37 condenser cardioid overhead mic is designed and voiced for overhead drums, cymbals, hi-hats, and percussion, and crisply captures all the performance nuances with superior transient response.

All models feature a unique non-reflective, textured satin finish, high-quality fine mesh Memraflex™ grilles, shock-mounted capsules for extraordinarily low handling noise, and polar patterns strategically chosen to deliver superb sonic performance with minimal off-axis complications.
