Touring Gear: The all new red dot design 2011 awarded series of live microphones
Posted on Tuesday, May 3, 2011
Whether for voices or instruments, the microphone forms an integral part of the connection between a performer and the audience. Because a microphone does much more than the physical process of transforming sound into electrical impulses: it can give you goose bumps, it can make you scream or make you cry, it can excite you and so much more. A microphone can transmit natural sound, but it can also transmit so much feeling. Yet another reason for beyerdynamic to set especially high standards and to build the very best microphones. “The new TG microphone series is the next step in our fireworks of innovation of the past years,” says Wolfgang Luckhardt, Managing Director of beyerdynamic. “beyerdynamic has always been known as a pioneer in the development of microphones. But we had come to the point where we needed to redevelop and restructure our product portfolio in this area, as well. From a global perspective, our product range is immense. Today’s users do not always know immediately which product is the right one for them. Thus, a self-explanatory, logical product structure was the starting point of our considerations. But beyond that, we have made our Sound Channelling Technology a true unique selling proposition. Sound Channelling Technology is responsible for that special “beyerdynamic sound” – as clear and natural as in real life. It makes us unique, and our customers appreciate that. This comprehensive microphone relaunch is a new milestone in the audio industry.” The result: the Touring Gear series of microphones showcases a complete product range for the stage, with a new uniform and elegant design, the best specifications, and a clear, easily understood classification system for the product portfolio.

“What does sound look like? How can you give a sound experience a shape? These were the central questions we asked before we set out on our work. We had an exceptional opportunity to create a holistic design concept for the Touring Gear family of microphones,” says Juliane Eckstein, Product Design Manager at beyerdynamic. “The colour concept is based on earthy, metallic tones: intentionally different from the ever-present black found in the music industry, yet which still place the musician in the foreground. Sleek, flowing forms combined with the details people expect from beyerdynamic represent the connection between tradition and change. In some ways, we set about this task radically and have made many changes, but we also wanted to let beyerdynamic’s gracious heritage live on.” The TG (for Touring Gear) is followed by the letter of the specific area of application – V for vocal, H for headsets, L for lavalier, D for drums and I for instruments. The first character specifies the category; the letter that follows specifies the microphone type – d for dynamic, c for condenser and r for ribbon microphone. An additional S signifies a model with a switch.

Mario Gebhardt, Audio Products Development Manager: “It is indeed a highlight when decades of experience in microphone engineering are combined with the ideas of young engineers and the requests coming from musicians and audio technicians and the result is not just a single microphone, but a whole series. Our objective was to get rid of unproductive relics, but to keep and refine proven strengths. At the same time, we have made space for new ideas and implemented them. One such result is Sound Channelling Technology, which lets us specifically work on acoustic design in order to achieve optimal sound, exceeding the standard parameters of a microphone system. When combined with outstanding design, excellent handling, and extreme sturdiness, the result is a thoroughly consistent live microphone series.”
