AmpliVox Supports The Great ShakeOut for Earthquake Preparedness. Northbrook, IL: March 2011 The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan offer valuable lessons to communities in earthquake zones around the world. Analysts have observed that thousands of lives were saved because the Japanese population was well educated in earthquake preparedness and evacuation strategy. Similarly, effective evacuations in Hawaii and the West Coast of the US unquestionably minimized the loss of life when tsunami-related waves hit those regions. With public attention turned to the importance of earthquake preparedness, the time is right for organized education programs. Even regions outside frequent earthquake zones benefit from preparedness education and practice. AmpliVox Emergency Sound Systems is proud to be a supporter of the first Central US Great ShakeOut, a special event that promotes earthquake preparedness and drilling practice for local governments, civic organizations, and individuals. Launched in California in 2008, the Great ShakeOut is now an international initiative practiced in several earthquake-prone regions. The Central US ShakeOut, scheduled for April 28, 2011, will offer training programs in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas. AmpliVox Emergency Sound Systems joins the ShakeOut effort with expertise in crowd management and tools for drilling exercises. AmpliVox manufactures a variety of emergency sound system products, including megaphones and portable PA systems, which are widely used by law enforcement and emergency service personnel to communicate information to crowds of people. It may surprise people that the Midwest was actually the site of the most powerful earthquake in US history, which struck the New Madrid Seismic Zone in southeastern Missouri in 1811. The potential for powerful seismic events in this region, and the repercussions of a significant earthquake along the Mississippi River, could be dramatic and devastating. The ShakeOut is designed to give officials and individuals the training they need to protect themselves during earthquakes and manage populations for evacuations when necessary. This event is recognized by the Department of Homeland Security as a Tier I National Level Exercise. “The ShakeOut event enables all agencies and companies to evaluate their equipment needs as part of a total earthquake preparedness plan. The benefits of advance planning can also be applied to other types of disaster response. Here at AmpliVox, we are experts at providing the right portable sounds systems for drilling and emergency response,” commented Don Roth, CEO of AmpliVox.
